Crime should be punished, while deviance in no way should be diminished. Deviance is when a person strays away from the societal norms. The norms of today are different than the norms that were in society years ago. Change is needed within a society for it to be well enough for everyone. A society is made up of an eclectic group of people within a community. The people in the community may have different views on topics; however they all should agree that deviance is present in today’s society. While deviance is usually frowned upon in society, what is not realized is that it is needed in order for society to function.

For society to run well, the laws and rules need to be clearly set. People can understand better when they see examples. If the deviants weren’t around the law wouldn’t be as much of a threat. Because of the fact that seeing the punishment occur is a way to confirm that the enforcement wouldn’t be a myth. If no offenders were punished then the community may become soft with its standards of acceptable behavior2. To keep the line drawn between acceptable and unacceptable, deviance should be tolerated.

Uniting a group is also a function of deviant behavior. The law enforcement can be united in a force to lower the act of deviant behavior. Or a group of people can be united against “the man.” A successful show of a functional deviant behavior is the largest and best organized of the protests was in Nashville, TN. This sit-in was done because of the want to desegregate lunch counters in Nashville4. Sit-ins are peaceful protests that are done by groups in order to change a law. Slowly the laws started to change because of these sit-ins and oppositions to the rules3. These protests have changed society to make everything more equal. Society has benefited from this group of bonded people deviating away from the societies norms.

Social change can also result from deviant behavior. Emile Durkheim believed that crime serves a social function1. Like previously stated a way to promote social change is through a sit-in, or a peaceful protest. Violation of society’s norms can be a way to get what you want. A wise person once spoke, “The only constant is change.” Obviously change is in the blood of humanity. Society’s norms have to change constantly to keep up with the ever changing cultures within the community. If deviance refers to the departing from the norms of society, the effect of these “deviants” is coincided with the changing needs of the community.

Crime and deviance are both needed for a society to survive. With the rules needed to be clarified, bonding to become stronger and social change to occur, deviance is a must. The norms of the community change every day with the different needs pertaining to each individual. Therefore to deviate away from the norms of yesterday should be tolerated today. The mere act of deviance helps to reiterate the fact that there is no way to deny the deviating behavior.
